Vivint Outdoor Camera Pro Setup Guide

Vivint Outdoor Camera Pro Setup Guide, Vivint outdoor cameras don’t just record activity around your home. Using our proprietary Smart Deter technology and computer vision chip, the Vivint Outdoor Camera Pro (Gen 2) proactively deters crime.

With its computer vision chip, the Outdoor Camera Pro offers enhanced Smart Deter to keep an eye on the area you define. If someone is detected and lingers too long, the Outdoor Camera Pro plays a loud sound and illuminates its LED ring, letting the lurker know they’ve been spotted. Your home is always protected with an outdoor camera that takes action automatically.

For true smart home security, you need a strong wireless connection. Other wireless cameras lose as much as 50% of their signal just trying to get inside—that’s why the Vivint Outdoor Camera Pro uses a hybrid wired Wi-Fi connection to make sure you have a smooth, fast video experience with less delay and buffering.

Vehicle Detection – Frequently Asked Questions

What is Vehicle Detection?
Vehicle Detection is a new feature available to customers with an Outdoor Camera Pro (Gen 1 and Gen 2). When turned on, Vehicle Detection will record a clip and notify you if a vehicle enters the detection zone you’ve designated in your camera’s settings.

Where can I access the Vehicle Detection feature?
The Vehicle Detection feature can be found in the settings menu for your Outdoor Camera Pro. If you have multiple Outdoor Camera Pros you will need to turn this feature on for each camera. Click here for instructions on how to turn on Vehicle Detection for both recording clips and notifications.

What does “detection zone” mean?
The detection zone is the area in your camera’s view you want to be monitored for foot or vehicle traffic. This area acts like a trip-line and any vehicle or person that enters into this zone will be detected, even if they only barely pass over the edge of the zone. You can adjust this area in your camera’s detection settings. Click here for instructions on how to adjust the detection zone for your Outdoor Camera Pro.

My camera is recording too many vehicle detection events, how do I fix that?
If you are receiving excessive amounts of vehicle detection events make sure the detection zone is not touching a street in the camera’s view. You may also lower the sensitivity slider, but keep in mind this will also lower the sensitivity for all other detection types, including people. If possible, you will need to decrease the size of the detection zone to lower the number of vehicle detections. For more detailed  click here.

Vehicle Detection isn’t turning on for my cameras, what’s wrong?
The camera could be having connectivity issues from either a loss of power or being offline. Please check to make sure your camera is plugged in and receiving power. Click here for troubleshooting steps for an offline Outdoor Camera Pro.

Important Notes

Before any camera troubleshooting, be sure the panel is VPN-connected to WiFi.
Required panel firmware: version 3.10.5 or greater.

Common Issues

• Camera Offline, Live Streaming, and Connectivity Issues – Your panel or app will tell you it is offline.
• Setting Your Notification Preferences – Make sure you are getting all the notifications you need.
• Missing / No Clips – The panel may be getting some clips but not every clip, which would indicate that the clip creation function is working, but perhaps not uploading all of the clips desired. Double check the camera network results and camera history for evidence.
• Live Video – If live video will not load within 8 seconds, there are many potential causes for this issue, but most commonly it is networking.
• Smart Sentry – If your camera’s tone is not activating, if you are not getting Smart Sentry notifications, or if you need to adjust schedules.

Takes 10-15 minutes

Reboot your panel

Show me how

Restart your camera

Unplug your camera for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. If your camera is connected to a WiFi bridge, unplug the camera’s Ethernet cord from the bridge (usually located in an outlet near the camera) for 30 seconds then plug it back in.

Make sure the camera has power

Make sure the camera is plugged into a working outlet.
To test the outlet, unplug the camera and plug a different device into the same outlet. If it also doesn’t receive power, try restoring power to the outlet.

Restart your router

Unplug your router for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. If you have multiple routers or a separate modem, restart them as well.

2.Select the Cameras tab.

Incorrect Detections

If you are receiving notifications for a vehicle detection when there really isn’t a vehicle here are a few common causes and tips to address them.

Bad Weather

Snow, rain, and dust can cause the camera to think it’s seeing a larger object like a vehicle. In these instances it’s best to snooze vehicle detection notifications until the weather passes.

1.Snooze on iOS: press and hold the vehicle detection until it expands and gives you the option to snooze notifications for one hour.
2.Snooze on Android: swipe down on the notification to expand it then select the option to snooze notifications for one hour.

Changes in Lighting

Sudden changes in lighting such as street lights, landscaping lighting, or house lights from a neighbor can look like headlights or can make a parked car suddenly “reappear” to the camera.

1.If possible, adjust the light source or camera view.
2.If the notification is being caused by your parked car “reappearing” to the camera you can adjust the detection zone to either fully encompass your car or make sure it isn’t in the zone at all.

Reflections

Reflections on the driveway or road after rainfall or sprinklers running can cause incorrect notifications.

1.If these instances are occasional it’s best to just snooze the vehicle detection notifications while the areas are wet.
2.If this is a consistent issue you may need to adjust your detection zone.

Detection Zone is Too Close to the Road

Vehicle detection can identify cars even if they only partially cross into the detection zone.

1.Make sure your detection zone isn’t touching any roads or high vehicle traffic areas in the camera’s view.

Lookalikes

Trailers, boats, or even riding-sized toy cars can trigger a notification.

1.Move the object to be completely out of the detection zone or adjust the detection zone to exclude the area that item is parked in.

If you are not receiving notifications or recordings, check to make sure the options are enabled on your Vivint app. If these are already enabled your may need to adjust your detection zone or your camera may be offline.

Outdoor Camera Pro – Set Up Detection Zone

How do I set my detection zone?

1.In the app, go to your cameras tab.
2.Tap the gear icon in the top right corner.
3.Select the camera you would like to edit.
4.Tap detection zone. You’ll be redirected to a page where you can set your own detection zone.

You can also adjust your zone sensitivity. Higher sensitivity will identify a greater number of objects as people, which could lead to more false positives. While lower sensitivity is more accurate, your camera may miss some detections—especially at far distances.

What makes an effective detection zone?

For the most accurate detection we recommend limiting your detection zone to the ground. This ensures the camera only reacts when a person steps into this space. If you outline the sky or anything outside your property, for example, you could receive false detections and notifications. Note that a person’s entire body does not need to be inside the detection zone for your camera to react.

Examples of effective detection zones

Notice the detection zones in the examples below do not include the road, sidewalks, or any neighboring properties. This ensures the camera detects, records, and deters only people on your property rather than people walking by, getting in their cars, or doing their yard work.

good zone 1 502w288h  good zone 2 502w285h

What makes an ineffective detection zone?

A detection zone is less effective when it covers more than the ground on your property. If your detection zone extends beyond your property or into the sky, it may cause your camera to unnecessarily detect, record, or play its deter tone. And if you’ve integrated a Spotlight Pro, your light could be strobing your neighbors!

bad zone 1 502w  bad zone 2 502w

What else should I keep in mind?

If you’ve followed the advice above to set your detection zone and are still experiencing detection issues, here are some other things to consider.

While it’s uncommon, trees and other objects can occasionally register as people and trigger “person detected” notifications and recordings or trigger Smart Deter. If possible, try working your detection zone around these objects or, when possible, move them outside of the zone. You can also lower your zone sensitivity.
